Field testing of gravel-rubber mixtures as geotechnical seismic isolation

چکیده

Abstract We present the results of forced-vibration experiments performed at large-scale prototype structure EuroProteas founded on gravel-rubber mixture (GRM) layers acting as a means Geotechnical Seismic Isolation (GSI). Three GRM with different rubber content per weight (0%, 10%, and 30%) but same mean grain size ratio were used foundation soil. Each GRM-structure system was subjected to harmonic forces in wide range excitation frequencies force amplitude. It found that 0.5 m thick soil layer 30% can effectively isolate structure. The strong effect fraction expressed detected period elongation dominating rocking component which leads more “rigid-body” response Moreover, developed base shear moment are significantly reduced regardless frequency, while increased damping important energy dissipation demonstrate effectiveness layer. Overall, experimental demonstrated use GSI be considered low-cost alternative seismic isolation technique.

Sand – rubber mixtures ( large rubber chips )

Mixtures of small rigid sand particles Ds and large soft rubber particles Dr are prepared at different volume fractions and tested to investigate their small-strain and zero-lateral strain responses (Dr /Ds & 10). Both data sets are simultaneously gathered in an oedometer cell instrumented with bender elements. Data are analyzed in the context of mixture theory and with the aid of numerical sim...

The study of seismic resistance of rubber-metal supports

This research reveals the efficiency of seismic isolation system in the form of rubber-metal supports with different height buildings at multi component seismic impact. As an example, seismically insulated monolithic reinforced concrete 5, 9 and 16 story buildings are considered. The solution of the problem is obtained by a direct integration of the motion equations for an explicit scheme in fi...

Seismic assessment of bridge structures isolated by a shape memory alloy/rubber-based isolation system

This paper explores the effectiveness of shape memory alloy (SMA)/rubber-based isolation systems for seismic protection of bridges against near-field earthquakes by performing a sensitivity analysis. The isolation system considered in this study consists of a laminated rubber bearing, which provides lateral flexibility while supplying high vertical load-carrying capacity and an auxiliary device...

Impact of Fiber Reinforcement on Deformation Characteristics of Cemented Sand-Gravel Mixtures

This paper describes triaxial compression tests conducted to determine the effect of fiber inclusion on stiffness and deformation characteristics of sand-gravel mixtures. Tested soil was a mixture of Babolsar sand from the shores of the Caspian Sea and Karaj River gravel. Portland cement was used as the cementing agent and fibers 12mm in length and 0.023mm in diameter at 0%, 0.5% and 1.0% were ...
